Optimizing Your Website for Search Engines Part 2 - Titles & Descriptions
January 14, 2011
In Part 1 of our article series on optimizing your website for search engines we looked at an example of a local plumbing company and created a prioritized keyword list based on our keyword research. Now comes the second part of our plan.
2. Write your Title and Description
You've see this before and don't even know it. When you do a search for anything on Google you see search results that have a Title link and then some descriptive text below. The descriptive text further defines what you will find on that page. This Title and Description can be controlled and is the starting point for having optimized content for the web. Let's use our example from the previous article and create some Title and Description text.
You'll remember our priority list of keywords is this:
plumber windsor
plumbing windsor
plumbers windsor
plumbers in windsor
Our goal now is to write a title and description that captures all of those keywords so that the site will come up for all of them. Here's how we would do it:
Title
Plumbers & Plumbing in Windsor Ontario | Plumbing Company Name
You see how all the keywords are represented in this sentence. Your company name is last because it isn't searched as often as "plumber windsor". It's important to note that Titles should be less than 64 characters in length or could be penalized by some search engines. Now lets see a description.
Description
Our plumbers in Windsor can help you with any of your plumbing needs. Contact us today to get an estimate and let Plumbing Company Name take care of it.
Once again, all keywords are represented and it still sounds like sales language which is exactly what you want. Sentences that don't make sense will confuse the reader and they will move on. It's important to note again that there is a character limit for descriptions and we suggest you keep it to 25-30 words.
So now we have our Title and Description for the search engines. In the next section we'll talk about how to implement this into your homepage to so that the search engines will see it and index you with them. Click Here to view the next section.
