Optimizing Your Website for Search Engines Part 3 - Implementing
January 15th, 2011
In our previous example we had a local plumbing company who would like to show up in the search results when they type in "plumber windsor". We've done some keyword research and after that we wrote our Title and Descriptions for the keywords we chose. Here's what we have so far:
Keyword List
plumber windsor
plumbing windsor
plumbers windsor
plumbers in windsor
Title
Plumbers & Plumbing in Windsor Ontario | Plumbing Company Name
Description
Our plumbers in Windsor can help you with any of your plumbing needs. Contact us today to get an estimate and let Plumbing Company Name take care of it.
Now we can look at the last stage in the process:
3. Implementing your Title, Description and Keywords into your website
Please note at this stage of the process you will need to be able to access the code of your homepage. Find your homepage file and open it in something that will allow you to read the code that is being displayed (Dreamweaver, TextEdit, FrontPage, Notepad). Now we are ready to implement our work into the homepage of the website. Almost all websites have a similar HTML structure and below is an example of that structure:
<html>
<head>
<title>Page Title Goes Here</title>
<meta name="description" content="Page Description Goes Here" />
<meta name="keywords" content="Page Keywords Go Here" />
</head>
<body>
This is typically where page content goes.
</body>
</html>
All we really want to look at are the tags in-between the heading tag (<head> and </head>). You will see that there 3 separate tags in there (if you don't see those then add them). The tags are <title></title>, <meta name="description" /> and <meta name="title" />. This is where we are going to add our Title, Description and Keywords. Have a look below to see what it looks like after I've put our work in:
<html>
<head>
<title>Plumbers & Plumbing in Windsor Ontario | Plumbing Company Name</title>
<meta name="description" content="Our plumbers in Windsor can help you with any of your plumbing needs. Contact us today to get an estimate and let Plumbing Company Name take care of it." />
<meta name="keywords" content="plumber windsor, plumbing windsor, plumbers windsor, plumbers in windsor, plumbing company name" />
</head>
<body>
This is typically where page content goes.
</body>
</html>
So you can see where I've added all our work and now all you would have to do is put this page back up live. Next we wait for a search engine spider to come by and crawl the site. This can take 30-90 days, but you can request it to come sooner by filling out the webmaster information for your site with Google. We'll talk more about that in another post.
Now you can repeat this process for all the pages on your site. Remember not to use duplicate Title or Descriptions as Google will penalize you for doing so. Keep the keywords relevant to the page and you will get indexed properly.
After you've been crawled, Google has a long line of qualifications that it uses to figure out how high up the search results you should be. You've done more than most just by doing the above so now you will unfortunately have to wait and see. We can't guarantee you will come up #1 right away, but over time it's possible. It really depends on the competition. Read our link building article to learn of some other ways to boost your rankings.
